l_8eAkari-small.jpgA bright and shining light now graces the pages of IREP Magazine - and soon the entire world!  Akari Kalai is a FutureStar of the highest magnitude.  With an already impressive resume as a writer, dancer, model, and background singer for heavyweights in the industry - Akari's ascent is right around the corner.  Yes - she is something special - check her out and find out why!

You are a beautiful multi-talented entertainer with proven success with your singing, modeling, dancing, and acting.  Which one of your talents do you enjoy the most?

Thank you! Can I pick more than one? :) Thing is, I grew up singing, dancing and acting all at once so I really enjoy all three, but I had to focus on one, so I chose singing and now I can incorporate everything through my music.

Your modeling successes include recurring spots with Meoshe at the Magic Show in Las Vegas, Tommy Hilfiger and an appearance in Maxim magazine.  Do you plan to continue to pursue your modeling career - or is your focus 100% on music for the time being?

100% on music for the time being. Modeling and commercials usually come with the career once you take off. I did get a role in the movie Bachelor Party 2 that's supposed to be coming out soon though. I fought Harland Williams in a strip club. Haha

Tell us the story about the first time you sang in front of an audience.

Oh, I think it was at a hip-hop club in Vancouver. I was singing backgrounds for another artist. I remember wanting to take the mic outta her hands and take her place

Your sister is a choreographer, your brother plays guitar, and you just do everything!  Are there any other musicians or artists in your family?

Just all the kids. From my mother and father, it's just me and my sister. But my dad had kids from his first marriage; he and his children are all professional singers

Do you write your own music?  If so - what inspires you?

I do and I also love collaborating with other writers, I also sing songs written for me.

It's all about a hit. My attention span is pretty scarce, so it helps to write with someone who won't let me leave the room and do something else.

l_9eb383a60364e509473294f0c1cef25f.jpgAre any of your songs about personal experiences?  If so - which one?

Not that I can think of. I like to tell stories about situations. but sing it in my perspective. Like the song, You Better Run is about a guy that got with a girl and never called her back, and the girl is like, u messed with the wrong one. I like singing bitchy songs. Haha

What are some of the obstacles that you've faced in the entertainment industry because of your ethnicity?

Oh Gawd! It's crazy. Well for one, when someone says Asian, they think Chinatown. And I'm not that. I love my roots, don't get me wrong. But I grew up with a more hip-hop culture. I consider myself different...just my whole attitude. When people meet me they usually ask what nationality I am if I'm mixed with something. Nope. Half Japanese half Chinese from Canada EH?

How have you overcome them?

People just have to meet me.

You're a very sexy and beautiful woman - and you're not afraid to show it in your music or in your style!  Do you see yourself as an emerging sex symbol?

Thank you. My fave outfit is sweats and flip flops. But I can do the sexy thing too...J

What do you like the most about the entertainment business?

The whole challenge and all the artists and fashion and publicity and the music. It all moves me.

What do you like the least about the entertainment business?

The scum bags, and dishonest people.

Has you ever had someone famous try to get with you and turned them down?  If so - tell us what happened?

Oh yeah. I usually say I have a man. Or brush '‘em off nicely

l_cdd3994bd47aa0e0097bd7b8def7f91e.jpgLet's talk about your music:

"Hostage" is a very hot and passionate dance track.  I like the rough edge and nasty feel of that song.  The guitar riffs are hot!  Tell us about how that song was created.

Chris Kelly produced the track, and called me and said I have a song for you. It was already written (by Reuben McCray) and he sent it to me and I loved it. It was totally my style. They know I love my guitar riffs.

Tell us about your song "High Heels" What will have us "spinning like a cartwheel!"

Love this song. Reuben McCray called me with the idea and I loved it, he flew down to Miami and we wrote the song together and recorded it. Some guys have a shoe/foot fetish. So this song was for them. What will have ‘em spinning? Me stepping out in my high heels of course.

I like the song "You Better Run!"  That just might be the ladies anthem for 2007!  Was that song inspired by a real event?  If so - tell us the story!

I think so. Some girls just get so used!  Hasn't happened to me, but if it did...he better run!

I really felt your song "For the sake of Me".  That song is just beautiful!  My favorite line is "I'd trade places with an angel just to get another kiss from you."   This song seemed very romantic and spiritual at the same time.  Tell us about the creation of this song.

That's my fave line too - and def one of my fave songs. Do you know that I had the whole studio crying in tears while we were recording it? While Reuben and I were writing this song, I was crying. It's just so sad! When I heard the track, I said I wanted to write about death...and that's what we came up with. I want Johnny Depp in my video...please!

What makes this song special to you?

I have a problem with thinking of death all the time. Don't know why...

I haven't experienced losing anyone I love GOD FORBID!! So this song just makes me sad thinking the people who have lost someone they love. I also love the line "send me a message and a sign to let me know ur still mine" (its kinda like ghost)

OK - you turned the heat back on with "Sumthin' Bout You"!  Explain to us what it means to be a "good driver"!

HA! The best line of the song. How did you pick it out? J to be a "good driver" it means to take control as a woman....let him be the passenger...ya know!

MAIN_PHOTO_4.jpgTell us about the song "Whatcha gon do? You made this a dedication- tell us to who and why

Chris Kelly did the track. It was the last track in his cd of beats and I couldn't stop listening to it. It reminded me of Eminem's song, "Stan" the way the base line goes and the darkness of the track. But I flipped it and sang it in a more alternative style. Cherokee wrote the song, and I thought of the Columbine tragedy. It's sad cuz it really happened and still happens. The hook is saying to the mothers, fathers, preachers, and teachers..."what are we gonna do about it"? (here I go, thinking about death again) geez

I loved the line "Sometimes you gotta laugh, sometimes you gotta cry.  Don't hold it all inside.  You need to let it go sometime."  What does that message mean to you personally?

It's such a beautiful song. Anita McCloud wrote it. It means just that. Don't hold your feeling bottled in, scream and tell the world, laugh, cry if you have to, just let it go.

Tell me about a time when you felt like giving up on music

Every time I get depressed. it's not like I feel like giving up...cuz I won't. But I'm just so ready to let the world know who I am, and I get antsy.

How do you feel about the music that's on the radio today?

You mean like Duffle Bag Boy? Haha. My friend got me liking that hook. Some of it is just thrown out on the radio...just because the artist is already a star. Some of it is hot. . When a song is a hit, it doesn't have to mean it's a great song, it's just spinning hard on the radio and they beat it in your head.

What is a normal day like for you?

What it's like now, and what I want it to be is different. For now, the first thing I do is make my bed. And the rest is whatever calls I get; I'll make my plans from there. These days I'm writing and recording in the studio, meeting new producers, and thinking about my career every min.

Do you have any children, any pets?

Babies? No! I'm a big baby so I can't think about that right now. Pets, my cat is at my mom's house back home...his name is Tigger, he's 20 pounds and huge (not fat) and awesome.

Who is your "famous" favorite artist, and why?

All time fave is Janet Jackson. I looove her. She's just an all around star. She's nice, a hard worker, and performs her ass off.

What motivates you to create?

Talking to my supportive friends and artists...they keep me motivated. And of course my family because I want to support them. It's the reason I left home in the first place. And music videos! I can't watch them sometimes, cuz it just makes me so antsy; I can't wait for my own.
